How Miami GP Home Hero Logan Sargeant Got To F1

A look at the junior career of Florida-born Logan Sargeant that propelled him to an F1 seat.

Williams driver Logan Sargeant is set to race at yet another home Grand Prix this weekend. With Formula 1 annually racing in Miami, Texas and Las Vegas, this weekend’s Miami Grand Prix will be the American’s 6th home race since joining F1 in 2022.

Karting

Logan Sargeant began his motorsport career in 2008 when he started karting. In 2009, he won the Florida Winter Tour – Rotax Micro Max and the Rotax Max Challenge USA – Micro Max. In 2011, he won the South Florida RMAX Challenge – Rotax Mini Max, the ROK Cup International Final – Mini ROK and the SKUSA SuperNationals – TaG Cadet. He then won the Trofeo Andrea Margutti – 60 Junior as well as the Trofeo delle Industrie – 60 Mini in 2012.

Sargeant moved up to the KF3 and KFJ classes in 2013. He was champion at the SKUSA SuperNationals – TaG Junior in 2014. In 2015, he won the KFJ classes of the WSK Champions Cup, South Garda Winter Cup, WSK Night Edition and the CIK-FIA World Championship.

In his final year in karting, 2016, he won the WSK Champions Cup – OK.

Formula 4

The American made his full Formula 4 debut at the 2016–17 Formula 4 UAE Championship. He had a great season, coming P2 in the overall Drivers’ Championship, as well as being the Rookies Champion. In every race he finished, he was on the podium.

Sargeant was P3 in the Drivers’ Championship of the 2017 F4 British Championship. He had 10 podium finishes including 2 wins.

Formula Renault

Logan Sargeant started competing in Formula Renault in 2017. He was a guest driver at the final round of the 2017 Formula Renault Eurocup. He drove in the final round of the 2017 Formula Renault Northern European Cup as well, with P4 being his best finish. Competing in one round of the 2017 V de V Challenge Monoplace, he was P2 in the first two races, and P1 in the final one.

In his full rookie season, he was P4 in the Drivers’ Championship of the 2018 Formula Renault Eurocup. The American won 3 races that season and achieved 4 further podiums. He was P2 in the Rookies Championship. Sargeant was P5 in the Drivers’ Championship of the 2018 Formula Renault Northern European Cup.

Formula 3

Logan Sargeant made his Formula 3 debut at the 2019 FIA Formula 3 Championship where he was P19 in the standings. Also in 2019, it was P6 in the qualification race and P3 in the main race for Sargeant at the Macau Grand Prix.

In the 2020 season of the FIA Formula 3 Championship, he had a better stint. He was P3 in the Drivers’ Championship, following 6 podiums and 2 wins. In the 2021 season, he was down to P7 in the Drivers’ Championship.

Le Mans

Sargeant competed in a few rounds of the 2021 European Le Mans Series. With a P4 and P7 finish, he was P19 in the LMP2 Drivers Championship. In the LMP2 Pro-Am Drivers Championship, he was in P12 with two P2 finishes. He also made an appearance at the 2021 Le Mans Cup.

Formula 2

Sargeant competed in one round of the 2021 Formula 2 Championship. He made his full Formula 2 debut at the 2022 Formula 2 Championship. The American had 4 podium finishes including 2 race wins, finishing P4 in the Drivers’ Championship.

Having achieved just enough FIA Super Licence points, Logan Sargeant was signed by the Williams F1 team to compete in the 2022 F1 season. This weekend, he will be racing in his home state Florida, at the Miami GP.
